An issue of trust...

Recent events (and supposed controversy) has prompted me to think about trust. Specifically, how to rebuild trust after it has been lost.

A person's actions can lead to a trust breakdown in their relationships with people, in some cases, an extreme loss of trust. The most interesting thing is that it appears some 'offenders' believe that trust is something that can be instantly regained.

These offenders are sadly mistaken.

When someone has broken your trust, it can often take a while until you feel able to trust them. Often, you may be looking for evidence that the person can again be trustworthy. For trust to be rebuilt, there are certainly steps that can be taken by the 'offender'.

One would be to confront the person, apologise and, if necessary, explain the situation and/or circumstances - afterall, sometimes a loss of trust can simply be through a misunderstanding. However, many offendors should be aware of why they are no longer trusted by a certain person, and should make an effort to address the issue.

Second would be seeking redemption. The offender needs to show that they are not only sorry for breaking trust in the relationship, but primarily, that they are aware they were responsible. Pretending something didn't happen is certainly not going to regain trust - as trust rarely appears 'magically'. If you want to be trusted again, let them know you can be and have learned from past mistakes.

Third would be making things right. Is there something you can do to fix whatever was wronged? Are there scores that need settling? Debts to be paid?

Fourth would be action. Do all that you can to proove your trustworthiness - especially to those who have reason to mistrust you. It's all about making an effort!

I am sure that using any of these ideas woud go further towards rebuilding trusting relationships than doing nothing, pretending it never happened and expecting everything to just self-repair.

Trust is too valuable for that.

Lazy Sunday

Just sitting here, enjoying a lazy Sunday after a good night of celebrating last night. Celebrating having my teaching interview last week that is...I think I did well, and that's the main thing, so now only my four week internship remains...and then all done!!
Course work over...employment search on...fingers crossed I get a good rating and get a good offer for 2007! Offers could begin as early as mid-October, so we'll have to see how things pan out...

Thank you to those who came last night to celebrate with me...as for the rest of you, you better make sure you lock Saturday 4th November in your diary to celebrate then - horror style;)
9월 11일

I should be in bed already...

Hey there...not sure if anyone even is there who reads this anymore, but thought I'd just update quickly to confirm I am still alive, despite all the pressures of life and the completion of my course, and ultimately my upcoming rating interview. But, I am here, a bit lonely with the dogs for company while their 'Daddy' is away...busy with planning, however really enjoying my time at school at the moment. Anyway, if anyone is out there...make a mark in your calendar for Saturday 4th November. Friday the 3rd is the final day of my internship, so was thinking of having a combination celebration of finishing my course and Halloween by having a "Horror High" themed party...what do you think? Anyway, mark it in...more details to come...

Broadcasting to the World

Yes, Dickhead has finally been unleashed to the World via that wonderful place, YouTube.

After gaining verbal permission from all involved parties (whether or not your were intoxicated and don't actually remember doing so is beside the point) Dickhead has been uploaded and made available to the unsuspecting world.

Anyway, here are the links - tell all your friends!

My lucky day...

I just thought I would share my lucky day with you today...please enjoy:)

  1. Received an email from Calla saying that she had two free tickets to an Indigenous Australian play -  Njunjul the Sun http://www.qpac.com.au/events/Njunjul%20the%20Sun at QPAC on Friday night and wanted to invite me along. This I see as good karma, I have often invited Calla along to free movie screenings I have won or accessed, so I certainly won't knock back a free night of theatre.
  2. Checked the Lano and Woodley Goodbye Tour http://www.brisbanepowerhouse.org/program/?fuseaction=summary&id=646  tickets to see if there were any good seats left. Found 6 seats in the 3rd row and figured I could not pass these up. As my credit card is maxed out...I called Dad. He gave me his numbers and the seats were secured (myself, Adam, Mum, Dad, Carly & Grant) - woohoo...that's almost as close as the time I could see right up Jimeoin's nose!
  3. Came home after watching Artemis' drama performance and found I had won a courier mail subscriber comp I entered. 2 tickets to The Directors Cut http://www.qpac.com.au/events/The%20Directors%20Cut by the Sydney Dance Company plus a signed program. I decided to invite Jules as dance is her second teaching area, so I figured she could explain some things to me as I have never watched a professional dance performance (only those lengthy eisteddfods  my brother used to do).

So, three lucky occurrences in one day, all involving some cultural/artistic/hilarious event. Good thing though, since I can't often afford to see all the things I would like to. Hopefully some volunteering with the film festival will provide some tickets to see movies - not to mention all the ones you get to watch for free while "ushering"! Anyone else want to do a bit of BIFF this year? Let me know...I'll hook ya up;)

Well, where is it?

You know what I mean, the 666 email hoaxes. Why aren't they filling up my inbox as crazy theories spread like wildfire about what might happen on this "omen" filled day (yes, coincidentally, it provided a great premiere date for the re-make of "The Omen").

The 6th of June 2006…or 6.6.06 and that's everywhere, whether you use the ole' aussie 'day then month' or that crazy american system of 'month then day' it still works out to be 6 then 6 and of course, for effect, we can add remove the 'two thousand and…' just say 6…oooh…doesn't it just sound spooky!

But seriously, only days after 9/11 had someone figured out the flight numbers in wingdings looked like a plane hitting two towers…I received two rounds of emails about that whole 01:02:03 04/05/06 "once in a lifetime occurrence" which of course happened twice with the day/month calendar confusion, so what if some people 'experienced' it in April and others in May…my point it, there was flood email about this stuff - everyone who had your address seemed to forward it to you.

In the terror-fear-driven world of today, surely there are some people out there who see the 666 as an omen to 'wreak havoc'…or at the very least there has to be some far out religious types who believe Revelation may be coming…?

This date is a mere week away, and damn it, I need something to get worked up and paranoid about!

So, if you find anything, send it this way and help me freak out:)

It has finally been tested...

My workplace screen saver for many many years was always a scrolling marcee, in a funky purple font:

"Life would be much more interesting if people sporadically broke out into musical"

Well, this notion has finally been tested, documented and uploaded. You can check it out here:

Let me know what you think...personally I would love for something like this to happen in one of my lectures!

The joys of editing...

I spent 8 hours in a little room with a laptop, a camera and Final Cut Express. Suprisingly the hours actually flew by rather quickly, but thankfully we got heaps done. I am working from home tomorrow, because I can. On Friday I go round to Dad's and teach him iMovie so he can start editing Mogzy's 21st DVD. Hmmm...maybe there's a business idea for the future?? People provide photos, videos and music and you just compile DVDs for them...for weddings, parties, anything...I wonder if there are people out there already doing it...?

Anyway, dinner is ready...not doing any study tonight, I figured 8 hours on one subject was enough for one day! Apologies if you hear much from me...I am dorwning in all the pressure...but hey, it'll all be over in just a few months....hooray!!
4월 9일

Can you believe it's April already?

Thought I'd drop in and say something, it has been a while. I am currently going through the motions of my study...procrastination has become my nemesis whom I meet daily in battle. I am spending the day filming in the city tomorrow for my mini-doc. Ha! This is my first real 'locations' job...after 5 years in the bloody department at PFTC! Anyway, hopefully weather will be on our side and people will be happy to answer questions for us on camera.

Abum is due to go away for about 7 weeks in the near future...that is if the airfield near Katharine isn't still flooded! I have only a few weeks for all my assignments to be completed and handed in before going on prac for 4 weeks. Alas there is a mirage in the horizon...a 6 week break because there are no exams...the mirage of course is broken by the overwhelming need to work as much as possible during that break to cover the 8 weeks of prac (and therefore no work) later in the year.

Anyway, enough of the aggravating stuff, onto the good stuff...mint slice cornetto icecreams...very nice...

Why do some species have such dependant offspring?

Watching a bit of a documentary on breeding insects.

The way many of them lay eggs and abandon them…their offspring hatch and begin life on their own, survival dependant on following their instincts. They're hungry, they find food. It's simple. They are instinctually aware of their predators. They do what is necessary to survive, even if that is only long enough to produce their own offspring.

How is it that these species are able to survive, without being taught by their parents? Why aren't humans like that? Why do so many mammals have a period of development when they must learn 'life' from their parents and kin? Could humans have ever survived if left on their own from birth? Would Darwin's theory of evolution reign true over time with humans having to develop much quicker in order to survive? Could a joey survive if evicted from the pouch at birth? Perhaps it is connected to the complexity of breeding?

Mammals as a general rule (excepting of course God's joke, the Platypus), do not lay eggs, but instead 'grow' new life inside themselves. This life is then born and is cared for by a parent, generally the mother, until they are 'of age' to care for themselves. Is it the 'growth' connection that causes the dependance?

One cannot rule out that mammals are certainly more complex than insects, is this the cause of a need to learn? Is there more to a mammals life than just food and breeding? Humans of course have demonstrated numerous other so-called 'needs' in the quest to understand the meaning of life.

I am sure there are people who have researched this…and I'm sure I could google something, but this was just a rambling of thoughts I was having and I figured recording them would mean they wouldn't just disappear out into the night while my brain empties.

Return of the Jedi

Okay, I have already ranted about this previously (refer to trackbacks to review), but I am forced to reconsider the matter of Return to the Jedi and the insert of Hayden into the final scene.

I caught the end of channel tens presentation of the aforementioned film and waited in anticipation to see if it would be the original theatrical version, or George Lucas' f**k-up version. Alas, it was his "digitally remastered".

I still stand by my conviction that the "new" music for the final scene is totally wrong and uneccessary as the original track was perfect. I have however thought about the insert of the young Anakin spirit in place of the bald white guy in the original (and incidently, revealed beneath the mask only minutes earlier). Having seen all six films, I realise that being able to insert the younger Hayden represented his physical form at the time of his first death, the one at the end of Episode III is much more symbolic and representative of the spiritual elements within the Jedi World. His spirit died not only when he was transformed into the suited Vader, but when he crossed to the Dark Side.

Woah!

I have just realised that this is a little 'geekish' of me…and then I realise that someone is likely to pick it to pieces, or give me crap, or I will be challenged by a true Star Wars geek…please don't hurt me…I am just rambling…really I am…just rambling on and on and on and on and on and….

The Oscars

You are invited to an Oscars evening of nibbles, drinks if desired and the chance to bid on your favourites to win...not to mention the German Gummi Bears, everybody's Oscar Evening Must!

From 7:30 onwards...Our place...nibbles & gummi bears supplied...bring something to drink and most importantly, go to here --------> http://a.oscar.abc.com/nominees/ballot/printballot_78th.pdf and print yourself a ballot.

Due to the time difference (refer to my rant - trackback) I suggest you make your ballot selections the night before, so the media doesn't ruin the 'suprise':) It is much more fun watching the awards with the atmosphere of a bingo hall!!

If you are coming, could you please SMS me and let me know (for nibbles catering)? And don't forget your ballot form...I will have copies here on the night, but no cheating allowed if you heard who won on the radio....:)

Hope you can come and gorge on gummi bears with me!

Memoirs

Just had to say something about the great night I just had with Silva. After a foiled attempt on Monday evening, we went this evening to see 'Memoirs of a Geisha'. Was great - a whole cinema just for us, like a private screening. We both loved the movie which is especially good since it was the first time Sil has been to the movies in a long time. I won't go on about the film (I did that enough with Silva over coffee afterwards!) but I will say it is certainly worth seeing on the big screen...it just looks beautiful and is easy to immerse yourself within the world of the film!

Expect to see this one win a couple of Oscars...Costume, Art Direction and possibly Cinematography I'm thinking...

Aussie Aussie Aussie

Happy Australia Day!

Thank you to all of you who came round, either Wednesday or Thursday or both! I had a great time, was really good to spend the day with friends and be as Australian as possible! A few personal highlights;

  • Bocce' on the lawn: despite the canine minefields, how can one complain about a sport that involved standing around and being able to drink the whole time? Congrats to those winners, especially Artemis...she knows how to get the close kitty!
  • Captian Ocker and Yobbo Boy: superheroes with aussie tattoos and flag capes...too funny!
  • The Puppy Pool Party: That huge lovable dope, Loki, and his time in the 'spa'...too cute!
  • End of Year DVD:"Impressing' Des with the final product, hehe. Thanks for all the feedback, remember, $10 for your own personal copy (something to hide from the grandkids one day!)
  • BBQ: Thanks Adam for cooking the dead animals, thanks Carly for helping me with the salad - yours was yummy! And thank you to anyone who helped prepare, clear or clean - you know who you are (and who you aren't, hehe)

So, without dribbling on any further, let's see if some of the pictures from the day don't get my space shut down:)

<Please go to photo album to check them out..enjoy!>

I have a major gripe to share...

…Awards Season and the detrimental effect of differing time zones.

Being the movie buff I am it shouldn’t be difficult to believe that I am an awards night junkie also. I love printing off the nominations sheet and marking my picks for each award category to make the viewing more exciting – I like testing myself and my understanding of how the politics of awards ceremonies work (I’m sure most people remember the year of the black actors…Denzel Washington for Training Day…a performance so not deserving of an Oscar). The Golden Globes kick it off, and while waiting for the Academy Awards, I try to see as many nominated movies in between (since in Australia most of the nominated films haven’t been released prior to the Globes, therefore making most of my predictions not based on actual performance).

I am more than aware of the time difference between Hollywood and Australia…I only spent 5 years working in a business that meant all calls to producers had to made before 11am Brisbane time if you hoped to get through. Pay TV subscribers may be able to view the awards ‘live’ (although if you are at work all day, that doesn’t really provide a great advantage). As for the rest of us, the awards are always shown on commercial TV on our evening (some hours after the ‘live’ award presentation).

Now, I get excited about watching the awards…look forward to it for a few days and wait anxiously for the ceremony to start so I can see how many awards I picked correctly. I did learn a few years ago to avoid the radio on the day of the ceremony…I will never forgive Robin Bailey (that beeatch on B105) for ruining one Academy Award year for me by announcing all of the big award winners WITHOUT A SPOILER (NB: spoiler as in “Turn your volume down now if you don’t want to know before you watch it…). I also learned to avoid the 6 o’clock news on the day of the ceremony as they love to share it too. I am now subscribed to receive entertainment news updates, and have avoided checking my email all day in case they send out results or details.

All of these things annoy me, especially when a spoiler is not included. If I hear a news update on the TV give me warning before just blurting it, I appreciate that as I am given enough time to hit the mute button and close my eyes. But what really annoys me, what really, really peeves me is when the very television station that will be broadcasting the awards ceremony only hours later reveal major award winners at EVERY SINGLE news update (and we are talking at least half hourly). Not only does it really annoy me, but it defies all logic…why tell us all the results when letting us watch it for ourselves boosts your ratings? Idiots.

Some of you may think, what’s the big deal with awards? What does it matter if you know the winners before you watch it? I can only liken it to a sporting grand final. Should you be stuck at work during the biggest game/event of the year in your favourite sport, and you’ve set the tape to record it so you can watch and ‘pretend’ it’s live when you get home. Should your asshole neighbour see you drive in later that night and say something like, “Wow, the Crows really came back in the last quarter, didn’t they?” Should your preferred response be to run him over…repeatedly.

So, while the time zones cannot be altered, and I will rarely have the opportunity to watch ceremonies live on pay TV, I think it is about time I composed some very strongly worded letters to television and radio stations…surely this is in breach of the codes of practice somehow….I hope…these bastards must be stopped!

<Deep breath>

Ok…now to prepare my dinner and sit down in front of the box and begin the evening with the red carpet arrivals…oooh…I wonder what they’re all wearing (at least if I miss it I know NW, Who or New Idea will have it covered)

<In case you missed it, the last sentence was typed with very strong suggestions of sarcasm>

(Ironically as I was typing this, I had to sprint out to the lounge room and slam down the mute button in channel 10s last attempt to ruin my Golden Globe night!)

How did I miss this news???

 The Tea Party Split

by Eve Jenkin

October 21 2005

Eastern inspired "Moroccan Roll" outfit The Tea Party are calling it quits after fifteen years in the business. The inevitable break-up became apparent when the band cancelled a recent spate of shows in Canada due to "personal reasons".

Throughout their prolific career the band has spawned a string of cult hits including "Heaven Coming Down," "Temptation" and "Release" and have nine albums under their belt. The Canadian band has always had a large following in Australia and toured the country on many occasions.

Tea Party front man Jeff Martin spoke recently about the break up, or "parting ways for the foreseeable future" as he calls it. "I am deeply appreciative of all the support Tea Party fans have shown both the band and me over the years," said Martin in an official statement. "While I'm not ruling out a return of the Tea Party at some time in the future, I am focused for now on my acoustic solo record, and hope to release the new music this winter and tour in support of it."

The band recently auctioned off a collection of their equipment for Charity, which should have been a warning sign that they probably wouldn't need them much in the future. Martin has headed to Ireland with his family to work on his solo project, whilst it is not known what bass player Stuart Chatwood or drummer Jeff Burrows will move onto next.

How was I not aware of this sooner??? What devastating news!!

I only found out while investigating to see if they were any closer to releasing a DVD of a concert. Guess that's out of the question now...

I am sooooooo depressed right now...:(

I think I'm going to have a bowl of comforting ice-cream...

Farewell Mr Miyagi

For those of you who were fortunate to celebrate Pat Morita's Birthday over drinks at Northgate, I have some saddening news found in the paper today... "US actor Pat Morita, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of the wise and dry-witted Mr Miyagi in The Karate Kid, has died at the age of 73" (Yes, he did die November 24th, but the Courier Mail only caught up today 2nd Dec). Pat Morita, most commonly known as Mr Miyagi from The Karate Kid series, is a significant figure for those of us old enough to remember the 80s (unlike those skanks who were 're-living' it for the the FIRST time in 2003/2004!!). Sadly it seems that Mr Muyagi has 'waxed off' for the last time....at least until one of us buys the box set of all the movies and we can bask in his chopstick fly-catching glory once more!!

TV Rant

Argh! Just saw an ad for Ten’s new series…Strong Medicine.

It doesn’t require any guesswork to determine that it is yet ANOTHER medical based drama.

Am I alone in despising television’s current content?

CRIMINAL DRAMA – Forensics, Mathematicians and lots of yellow tape

LEGAL DRAMA – Lawyers, Police and multiple LA varieties

REALITY – Karaoke competitions, Garden landscapers, Princesses, Musicians, Celebrities, Housemates…the list goes on and on…often more constructed than the dramas

Getting very close to saturation point is …

SUPERNATURAL DRAMA – Seeing dead people, Reliving days, Witches, Vampires and all other ‘strange’ happenings...

…although, I think the reason it currently works is because there is formula variety and no real duplicates...but if they pump out much more it will break the balance.

But consider the two premiere series that were most popular in 2005…

LOST & DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES

Why did they work? I propose it was due to their formulas…the mystery. Each week unravels, revealing a little bit more about the mystery, but generating even more questions.

So what other TV shows do we like?

What is it about them that you like?

What is it about them that makes you want to watch each week?

What new television could they be making to take over some of the crims, lawyers and nobodies?

Hmmm…I’m going to think about this some more…right after I finish watching TV

Class of 2006. I don't want to have to tell you agaaaaaiiiinn.

Yes folks, as per previous entry (or below for those unfamiliar with the blog format) people should actually be providing me with something...at the very least, a response with your music suggestions...otherwise, picture this tragic scenario...

Without people providing music, I choose the clips and the results could be instances of Grant's footage being accompanied by 'Happy G'...you may not think this is tragic, but the highly probable result of Grant inflicting pain on me in retailiation is absolutely horryfing to imagine!!

That's not at all to say it still wouldn't be hilarious!!

So yeah, comment or email or call or something you naughty naughty boys and girls...footage and images would be great too!
